ATV Insurance and If You Need Collision Coverage
ATV Insurance can be excellent coverage for taking that adventure out onto the dirt path road. Ultimately, when you’re out exploring rugged terrain on your trusty ATV, the last thing you want to worry about is a financial loss due to unexpected incidents. ATV insurance can provide comprehensive coverage for your all-terrain vehicle. Subsequently, this coverage protects you from the high costs of accidents, theft, and other mishaps on your adventures.
ATV Insurance Policies
ATV insurance policies typically include property damage liability, bodily injury liability, comprehensive coverage, medical expenses, uninsured/underinsured motorists coverage, and collision coverage. We will dive deeper into each ATV policy coverage and provide more information on what to look for when choosing a policy.
Property Damage Liability (required)
Whether you accidentally collide with a fence, dent another person’s vehicle, or damage any other type of property, property damage liability coverage can help ease the financial burden of repairing or replacing the damaged items.
Unlike bodily injury liability coverage, property damage liability coverage usually has a single limit per incident. Therefore, if you have a limit of $30,000, your policy will cover damages up to that amount. This occurs regardless of damages.
Bodily Injury Liability (required)
If you or your passenger sustains injuries in an ATV-related accident, bodily injury liability coverage can help finance medical bills and related expenses. The coverage is usually subject to both per-person and per-accident limits. Consequently, these are fixed amounts that apply regardless of how many people are involved in the accident.
Collision Coverage (optional)
Collision coverage helps pay for the replacement or repairs of your ATV if damaged or destroyed in a collision. However, it usually requires the policyholder to pay a deductible before the insurance company compensates for the ATV’s repairs or replacement.
When Do You Need Collision Coverage?
If you own a high-value ATV or use your ATV frequently, collision coverage may be critical, as the cost of repairing or replacing your ATV after a collision is no joke. Furthermore, if you have a loan on your ATV or lease it, you might have to pay collision coverage to your lender or lessor.
Comprehensive Coverage (optional)
Comprehensive coverage should cover damage that doesn’t result from a collision with another vehicle, such as theft, earthquakes, vandalism, fires, flooding, and other causes. Like collision coverage, comprehensive coverage requires a deductible.
Medical Expenses (optional in most states)
The coverage can help cover the cost of hospitalization, surgery, diagnostic tests, and ambulance transportation, among other medical services. While personal injury protection (PIP) is required in some “no-fault” states for car drivers, it is usually not required for motorcycle or ATV owners due to its high cost.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists (requirements vary)
If an underinsured/underinsured motorist injures you or your passenger, this coverage will help pay for your medical expenses and other related costs. You don’t need uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage in all states. But some states may require one or both as part of your ATV insurance policy.
